13 "Holistic" Things my Husband Loves

SUBSTACK • October 2, 2023

For those of you who don’t already know, I started on my own wellness journey back in 2017 after losing my dad to ALS. It started with VERY small habit changes like less coffee (I used to drink it pretty much all day long), and riding my bike more often; but, here I am now (5 years later) as a Holistic Health Coach helping others do the same. It was only a matter of time before my husband, Darius would develop his own set of holistic habits, right?! 😂

Don’t get me wrong, there are plenty of things I do that Darius wants nothing to do with or just makes fun of me for 🤣 (like having avocado toast for breakfast) but overall, he’s come to be really supportive and surprisingly into the lifestyle I’ve created not just for myself, but for our family 😊

He recently gave me the idea for this post after ordering some new soaps he absolutely loves. He (almost) found these all on his own— I just sent him this website as a resource to make sure the ingredients were clean. Hmm now that I think about it…maybe I should’ve just had him write this post 😂

Here are 13 “holistic” thangs Darius currently loves:

1. This Ancient Minerals Magnesium Oil Spray

I purchased this for myself while I was pregnant to bump up my magnesium intake (magnesium deficiency is very common and more so, during pregnancy). I spray it on after showering every night. One night, in typical Darius fashion, he decided to just try it for himself and it was O.V.✌️I think it was because I may have mentioned it was like salt water. And, now you’re probably confused 😂 Let me explain…

Darius has these dry areas of skin on his scalp that he was never quite able to heal. Once he moved down to Miami from Memphis, he noticed they got significantly better. Then, he realized, that when he keeps his hair short and spends time at the beach and in the sun, it’s also a lot better. Sooooo once he found out that my magnesium oil spray was like a more concentrated salt water spray, he was spraying it on his scalp every night. He swears it helps! Beware though…this sh*t kind of burns when you first start using it 😅 (and I don’t necessarily recommend it to heal rashes or dry scalp lol that’s just a Darius thing…)

2. This Green Jasmine Tea

Darius is currently working full-time, AND ALSO working on an app called Joolep all while becoming a dad for the first time; so naturally, he’s been under some additional stress 😅 I had suggested he lay off the coffee for a while to see if it would help. Not that he listens to me or anything LOL but, he did decide (on his own) to try some coffee alternatives. He’s currently liking this jasmine tea by JoJo (a local Miami brand) and how it makes him feel throughout the day as opposed to the coffee. He’s having one in the morning and one in the afternoon and says it keeps him from crashing. So far, so good!

3. Four Sigmatic Focus Mushroom Blend

While he’s not currently having this mushroom blend right now, there was a point recently (after giving up the coffee) that he was enjoying this in the mornings with hot water and a splash of milk. You can also add this to coffee, tea, and smoothies too!

4. Morning Smoothie for Breakfast

Darius has this smoothie for breakfast almost every.single.day. 😅 (yet he talks sh*t about my eggs) because it’s really quick and easy plus he says it helps him poop. I’m listing the ingredients down below without exact amounts because when I tried to ask him how much he uses of each ingredient, he laughed in my face and said “No smoothie tastes the same.” He did however let me know that he usually lets the oats soak for a while before blending if that’s helpful.

Ingredients:

5. Dr. Squatch Bar Soap + Deodorant

All I have to say about these soaps and deodorants is that he loves them and so do I 🤣(I’m currently using them too lol). Oh, and his favorite scents so far are the Spearmint Basil (soap), Birchwood Breeze (deodorant), and the Cool Fresh Aloe (deodorant).

6. Waterdrop NERO Frosted Glass Water Bottle

A simple glass water bottle with a sleeve for a decent price!

7. Sky Organics Raw Cocoa Butter

For the longest time, Darius has used coconut oil to moisturize throughout the day, but he recently felt like it was no longer moisturizing his body the way it used to so he decided to try some raw cocoa butter. This one’s nothing fancy, but it literally smells like chocolate and is definitely moisturizing (I’ve tried it a handful of times myself). The only thing is…he uses our hand-held steamer to melt it because it’s extremely solid otherwise 😂 In fact, he was trying to melt some over the stovetop for a massage the other night and it was a FAIL. Maybe consider buying this only if you own a steamer too? 😅😬

8. This Oat Milk Creamer

We were on vacation in Sarasota and my cousin purchased some creamer. One morning, Darius had his coffee with some and remembered how much he enjoyed it, so I suggested this one (because he likes oat milk). Typically, I recommend nut milk over oat milk because oats are carbs, and can spike your blood sugar BUT it’s what he enjoys and this particular brand is better than most other options out on the market (full of sugar and other harmful additives). If you have creamers at home right now, read the ingredients and let me know what you see in the comment section below…😅

9. This Buffalo Sauce

Mmmmmmm this sauce is SO.GOOD. I can’t believe I actually found a buffalo sauce I really like, and Darius really likes with mostly whole-food ingredients! It’s perfect for flavoring simple dishes like animal protein with veggies or even just bowls you might throw together.

10. Acendi App

Darius met the founder of this app through a startup community in Miami. He’s been using it to practice breathwork and meditation to keep his thoughts as positive as possible and help him through this stressful period. He’s really enjoying it so far! Last night, he even listened to a session while showering 🙌 Who is this man?! 😂

11. Adrenal Cocktails

Eyyyyyy! This one was most definitely influenced by me 😂 (I mean…let’s be real — all of these were haha but this one especially). I was consistently making 1-2 per day and having a glass in the afternoon while working (we both work from home) for a hydration boost. When I explained the benefits to Darius (hydration, minerals, and stress management), he wanted one himself. He’s been making them ever since (especially if he finds himself with a headache or just depleted). You can find a bunch of recipes online, but here’s a really easy one:

Ingredients:

12. Gaia Herbs

Gaia Herbs is our medicine cabinet go-to and Darius especially swears by them (he recommends them to everyone). One of his favorites is the Mighty Lungs — perfect for getting rid of the mucus when you have a cold.

13. Stumptown Organic Coffee

If you’re a coffee person, I highly recommend buying high-quality organic beans! Stumptown is a go-to for Darius. Pro tip: Check the roast dates on the packaging for the freshest buy!

And, that is…THAT!

Hope you enjoyed this lil’ (kind of random) post on how I’ve influenced my husband over the years 😂 Yup, I’m taking all the credit!

As always, feel free to drop any questions or comments down below! I’d love to hear from you…

Mucho love,

Cait
