Nutrition myths during pregnancy: what’s true, what’s outdated, what you can ignore - part 3

SUBSTACK • March 31, 2026

What actually matters day to day

When you zoom out, pregnancy nutrition is far less dramatic than social media makes it seem.

What matters most is consistency over time, not what you ate on one random Tuesday.

It matters that you’re eating enough, especially if nausea, food aversions or a busy life make meals irregular. Skipping meals and chronic under-eating are far more stressful for the body than eating a less-than-perfect food.

It matters that you’re including foods that help you feel satisfied - meals with protein, carbs and fat that actually keep you full.

It matters that you’re hydrated, resting when you can and adjusting expectations based on how you feel, not how you think you “should” be eating.

And it matters that food doesn’t become another source of pressure or self-judgment during a physically and emotionally demanding time.

Some days will look balanced and nourishing. Other days will be crackers, toast or whatever stays down. Both count.

Questions women should ask instead

Instead of asking, “Is this food allowed?”

Try: “Does this help me feel nourished and supported right now?”

Instead of: “Am I gaining too much or too little?”

Try: “Am I eating enough to support my energy, growth and recovery?”

Instead of: “What’s the perfect pregnancy diet?”

Try: “What patterns can I sustain most days?”

Instead of: “What did she eat during her pregnancy?”

Try: “What does my body seem to need?”

And instead of: “How do I control this?”

Try: “How do I support this?”

Those questions lead to far better decisions - and far less stress.

The bottom line

Pregnancy nutrition doesn’t need to be a minefield of rules and guilt. Most myths persist because they’re simple, dramatic and easy to repeat - not because they reflect how bodies actually function.

What your body needs during pregnancy is not perfection. It needs fuel, flexibility and compassion. It needs room to change, adapt and sometimes just get through the day.

If you can let go of outdated rules, tune out fear-based advice and focus on what genuinely supports you, you’re already doing something very right.

And that, quietly and consistently, matters far more than any myth ever will.
